1. Ukraine
Ukraine officially became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991 after its declaration of independence at the end of the Soviet Era. Ukraine is located between Poland and Belarus and shares borders with Russia across the Black Sea. Ukraine’s official language is Ukrainian while Russian is spoken predominantly in the south and east where ethnic Russians live. English is widely understood throughout the country.
2. Russia
Russia is a sprawling landlocked country bordered by China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Albania, Turkey, Bulgaria, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel. Its economy is based upon oil production and industry; however, agriculture represents a significant sector of the national economic output and employs approximately 15% of the active workforce in rural regions. In addition to being a nuclear power, Russia was once a superpower and now is becoming a super state due to recent events and internal conflicts.
3. Crimea
Crimea is a peninsula in Eastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea. It was annexed by Russia in 2014 following the annexation of the rest of Ukraine. Crimea has been inhabited since 5400 BC, although archaeologists believe some of the earliest human settlements were established during the Neolithic Age around 3000 BC. After decades under Soviet rule, Ukraine gained independence in 1991.
4. War
The Crimean crisis began on March 1st, 2014, when armed pro-Russian separatists occupied government buildings in several eastern cities. These actions came amid a dispute over control of Crimea’s autonomy referendum on whether to join Russia. On May 11th, 2014, these protests escalated into violence resulting in dozens of fatalities and thousands of arrests. Putin responded by sending troops to occupy Crimea. In the aftermath, the United Nations imposed sanctions on both countries and placed them on their international arrest lists.
5. Conflict
On December 4th, 2013, the U.S. State Department labeled the situation regarding Crimea and the Ukraine as being at risk of civil war. Many analysts have pointed out similarities between the current crisis and the Cold War era between the US and USSR.
6. Ethnicity
Ethnic groups make up almost half of the population. Ethnic Ukrainians account for about 45%, Russians account for 43%, Tatars account for 2%. Ethnic Russians represent 42% of Crimea’s total population.
7. Language
Ukrainian is the primary language of Ukraine, followed by Russian. In fact, the majority of Crimeans speak Russian. Both languages share similar phonetics and grammar despite having different words. While both languages belong to the Slavic family of languages, they have developed differently. Ukrainian is closer to Polish and Slovene in terms of vocabulary and syntax, while Russian belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of languages.
